Afro-Cuban Quartet gigs this weekend

This weekend I have a few gigs with my latin quartet, which hasn’t been played out much over the year or two. My buddy Steve Abrams is flying up from the Bay Area to play keyboards with me. Steve and I first started playing together in 1985 at Cabrillo College, basically my very first combo. He now leads a smoking band down there called Havana Jazz. Last summer we met in Ashland, Oregon to play the Noche Latina festival at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The quartet will be rounded out with bassist Al Criado and drummer Reinhardt Melz.

Our first gig is at the Silverton Wine & Jazz Festival on Saturday afternoon. We’re on from 2:30pm-5:00pm at Mac’s Place on Water st. Immediately after that gig I’ll be playing with Robert Moore’s group at the very same venue from 5:30pm-8:00pm. Then we race back to Portland for a few sets at the Tugboat Brewing company from 9:30pm-11:30pm. We’ll be joined there by percussionist Scotty Wardinsky.

This all-start rhythm section is going to be KILLING!
