Pee Wee

Few sound like Pee Wee Russell (1906-1969). Best known, perhaps, as a traditionalist, he came up with Jack Teagarden, worked with Bix and was a mainstay with Eddie Condon.

But you may be surprised to learn he played with Monk at Newport, and his 60s group (albums: Ask Me Now! and New Groove) covered John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. He truly defies categorization.

Tea, Bix, Condon, Monk, and Coltrane. That’s what jazz is all about. No boundaries, no colors. Just music.

Here’s Russell in 1958, swingin’ the hell out of this tune
